ÛÛ The Last Tour on Earth, the live souvenir from the ill- ÛÛ
ÛÛ fated Mechanical Animals tour, is an aural document of a ÛÛ
ÛÛ primarily visual experience. Marilyn Manson's records are ÛÛ
ÛÛ extremely well-crafted, filled with revealing sonic ÛÛ
ÛÛ details, but in concert he concentrates on spectacle, ÛÛ
ÛÛ preferring dazzling visuals to new arrangements. That's ÛÛ
ÛÛ not a bad thing - Manson is an agent provocateur and his ÛÛ
ÛÛ shows should be an overwhelming visual experience. ÛÛ
ÛÛ There's no need for reinvented versions of "The Beautiful ÛÛ
ÛÛ People" or "Irresponsible Hate Anthem", since they serve ÛÛ
ÛÛ as the soundtrack for the sights. So, even if it's a good ÛÛ
ÛÛ selection of Manson favorites performed by a tight band, ÛÛ
ÛÛ it's hard to see the purpose of The Last Tour on Earth. ÛÛ
ÛÛ Apart from rougher vocals and slightly more immediate ÛÛ
ÛÛ sound, there are no true differences between the stage ÛÛ
ÛÛ and studio versions of these songs. Unlike many live ÛÛ
ÛÛ albums, there isn't much visceral energy, because the ÛÛ
ÛÛ music had to be fairly regimented to coincide with the ÛÛ
ÛÛ visuals. Based on the music, it's hard to tell that this ÛÛ
ÛÛ is a live album, except for stray crowd noises and ÛÛ
ÛÛ Manson's on-stage ramblings, which are more interesting ÛÛ
ÛÛ than the music. It's fascinating to hear him act like a ÛÛ
ÛÛ sober Jim Morrison, trying to get his audience to yell ÛÛ
ÛÛ "motherf*cker" and winding up with an incoherent ÛÛ
ÛÛ "Maoohahfuer", or relating his spellbinding vision of a ÛÛ
ÛÛ dreamworld, where the land is made of drugs, cops give ÛÛ
ÛÛ Manson head, and God is spelled "D-R-U-G-S", especially ÛÛ
ÛÛ since these rants are delivered, by name, to the ÛÛ
ÛÛ Midwestern off-markets of Grand Rapids, MI, and Cedar ÛÛ
ÛÛ Rapids, IA. This may be the best moment of the record, ÛÛ
ÛÛ but it doesn't change the fact that it's not necessary ÛÛ
ÛÛ for anyone but diehards. ÛÛ
